This map provides an overlay for the OpenStreetMap(OSM) map that shows marked hiking paths around the world. OSM is a collaborative project to provide freely available cartographic data of the world. This map only shows routes that someone has entered in the database. If your favourite route is missing, find out how to contribute to OSM.
The map essentially shows all hiking relations that follow the scheme described at Walking Routes. Route shields are created using either osmc:symbol tag or ref. Hiking routes for wheelchairs are those tagged with route=wheelchair.
The osmc:symbol tag must be in the following format:
osmc:symbol=waycolor:background:foreground:text:textcolor
Waycolor must be there but is ignored for this map. Foreground may be empty. Text and text color can be ommited but only when a foreground is given.
Furthermore, on more detailed zoom levels, guideposts together with the name and elevation are shown, as well as hiking network nodes (nodes tagged with rwn_ref=number).
In order to accommodate regional particularities, the map has limited support for rendering region-specific tags. For more details see the page about Regional Rendering.
The map also shows relation hierarchies, that is, relations that contain other relations. How exactly a sub-relation is treated by the renderer depends on the network tag:
network tag, the child relation is taken to be just a stage of the parent relation. Thus, its route is added to the parent relation and the child relation is not shown in the map.network tag of parent and child relation are different, the relation are assumed to be independent. The route of the child relation is added to the parent and both relations are shown in the map.The overlay is updated once a day. The date in the upper right corner shows the last update. However, note that only contributions until midnight of the previous day will have been taken into account and the import and rendering cycle normally won't finish before late afternoon. (Updates of the underlying Mapnik-Map are not within this site's control. Depending on the current load of the OSM server they take between a minute and a week.)
The machine runs a standard Debian Linux with a osmosis/Postgresql/Mapnik toolchain. Some postprocessing is done on the database before rendering. Details and scripts will be published soon.

You may use the overlay on other sites as long as access rates are moderate. Please, cache tiles as often as possible.

Neither correctness nor completeness of the map can be guaranteed. If you go out for a hike, get a decent paper map, appropriate gear and don't leave your common sense at home. Nature can be as ruthless as it is beautiful.
